Ostracism: A Social and Biological Phenomenon
Margaret Gruter and Roger D. Masters, Eds.
1984
This special issue is the outcome of a conference entitled "Ostracism" held in Monterey, California in September 1984. The conference brought together biologists, lawyers, and social scientists for the purpose of taking a fresh look at the subject of ostracism by addressing the following questions: What is its history? How frequently does it occur? Are there biological substrates? And what do other species do? In effect, is there a way to get hold of a phenomena that we all see, frequently experience, and sometimes participate in? The writings in this issue present answers to these questions and suggest that the phenomena of ostracism are ripe for further study and research.
